The Green Party allows Mr. Miller to be pro-seal hunt.
Because of this, we do not support a petition against him.

Eleceted official of Green Party called FriendsForSeals.org "douche bags" as you can read about in the article link below.
Please note that the name-calling is not an issue with FriendsForSeals.org.
We aren't looking for an insincere apology.
Mr. Miller has made it clear that he DID NOT call ALL animal activists this foul name, but us only.
He tweets repeatedly accusing us of libel.
He so far has not responded to us with our many requests, asking him to what he is referring.
He has contacted us many times, but refuses to answer why he tells his followers that we lie.

Mr. Miller is in St. John's Newfoundland and is pro-seal hunt.
The Green Party Canada as a body has a firm stance of being against the commercial seal hunt.
From this exchange with us that Mr. Miller created, came what has turned out to be a startling revelation to many.
Elizabeth May, Green Party leader has confirmed that not all elected members are, nor have to be against the seal hunt, so long as they support most of the party's beliefs.

WWF Supports Seal Slaughter in Canada

We understand that many people around the world feel strongly about the suffering of the individual seals killed in the hunt and we share this concern. To inform the ethical debate on the annual seal hunt, WWF promoted the establishment of an independent expert panel of veterinarians to assess the treatment of harp seals during the course of the hunt, including the manner in which seals are hunted. The veterinarians report has been presented to the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and its key recommendations are being acted upon by DFO management and have been favourably received by industry. The panel will continue to be active in promoting humane hunting methods.'

What WWF didn't address here is that, with regards to that specific study, what was found by the independent veterinary panel was that the 'hunt' is inhumane. Why did WWF leave that out of their comment?
Also, WWF is saying that since it was reported to the DFO, that animal welfare groups should just let it go at that. We knew full well then that the DFO wouldn't pay attention to the study and guess what???....they didn't!

Why boycott ?

We participate in the promotion of boycotting fish from Canada. Why? Full-time fishermen are the ones who kill the seals. Now with no market for seal products, they leave most of the seals behind, wounded, piled to rot, or dumped back into the ocean.

The world has spoken and it wants Canada's dead seals no more.

The United States leaving behind the practice of seal killing decades ago, the imposing figure of Russia's Vladimir Putin putting a stop what he called "a bloody industry", and the nail-in-the-coffin decision of the European Union banning the import of seal products, leaves Canada alone.

By themselves, with no customer, the handful of commercial fishermen who cruelly kill thousands of seal pups each year look to the taxpayer for funding, and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for purpose, to continue to kill seals.

The market for seal pelts is closed.

The DFO has tried and tried to cater to the last remaining participants by having it appear to the public that the seal hunt is necessary, but there is no country in the market for dead seal.

For 25 year's the Canadian government has tried to shove seal fat down the gullet of the Chinese. They don't want it, and the growing animal welfare voice of China, becoming tired of their own country's practices, has become highly offended.

Canada continued the killing, even though the fishermen, violating Marine Mammal Regulations, admitted that they kill seals and don't even bring them in because there is no money in them.

The government, reeling from losing their fight of the EU's decision at the World Trade Organization, tried to make the public believe that maybe, just maybe, the dead seals heart valves could be useful.

But no.

The taxpayer will continue to pay for fishermen, who already have full-time jobs at fishing, to go out to kill seals "for sport" as they put it, but see no return on the investment.

The seal hunt is dead.

The old joke, "The 80's didn't come to Canada til like '93", is all we're waiting on....for the Canadian government to find out it's ended.

When speaking of the annual commercial seal hunt in Canada, politicians and supporters inevitably mention the necessity of the killing by placing focus on the aboriginal peoples. Canada's government uses the coastal communities indigenous as an excuse to continue the seal slaughter, falsely citing the hardship ending the hunt would cause them.
This rhetoric goes on so often that some citizens assume it to be true.

However, the commercial seal slaughter and the hunting by the indigenous, are two completely separate things,

Of the typically hundreds of thousands of seals killed in Canada each year, 1% are killed by the native peoples.

Campaigns calling for the end of commercial seal hunting do not effect them. Even the EU ban on commercial seal products excludes them.
Every year, each has it's own quota. COMPLETELY SEPARATE.

Politicians know this, which means that using a matter-of fact manner about a known misconception, shows a lack of integrity, and the coastal community buys into it. If politicians were genuinely concerned with economic stability, they would cancel commercial seal hunting immediately.

Canada's government has been irresponsible in continuing to use taxpayer funding to "create" a product, in this case, dead seals, and hoping to find a buyer afterwards.

Each year their customer base not only grows smaller and smaller, but for the past several years, has been virtually non-existent.

Besides believing the effect on the native peoples, some Canadians even believe that the $4.3 million they spent for Coast Guard assistance for the 2009/2010 seal hunt wasn't an additional cost. This couldn't be less true. Each year the Coast Guard, while somehow allowed to be directed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, are deployed to lead seal hunter boats, break ice for the seal killers, and rescue/retrieving them during the many accidents, including drownings. This is time and money spent above normal operations and duties meant for this Federal branch.

Though most of Canada and the world wants the seal hunt to end, the government dismisses their desires, switching the blame to over-population of seals. Without getting into how this is impossible in an undisturbed eco-system, Canada needs to tell the government that they see through the smoke and mirrors. If the seal hunt goes on due to over-population, why, if the hunting of harp and grey seal season is from November 15 through June 15 each year, does 95% of the killing occur after pups are born in the spring? If killing were done due to over-population, wouldn't the commercial fishermen of Canada be killing adult seals of breeding age?

Only Canada's citizens can allow the government to continue to shamelessly misconstrue the facts. Why would anyone allow "tradition" to get in he way of thinking for themselves?

The miniscule amount of dollars brought in by an industry that has long fallen off of its last leg, is dwarfed by the funding taken from the taxpayer. How much? About 3 times as much.

While tax dollars are being wasted on DFO mismanagement, compensation to fishermen for boat damages, travel expenses to find customers for seal products, taking countries and the EU to the WTO to fight seal bans, not to mention the loss of respect by the rest of the world, and pending trade deals with the EU, there IS one facet of the seal slaughter industry that is paying off big time - that's the propaganda campaign.

While the taxpayers pay for another seal killer to be rescued by helicopter today, the seal pups are dying a slow-agonizing death.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada has their "3-step process" for killing seals in place.

This was supposed to be a 'feel good' effort on their part, not so much to appease animal activists, but to give their blood-thirsty minions in the coastal regions something else to burp back to the more than 2/3rds of the country who want the hunt to stop.

Once again this year, the seal slaughterers are in violation of Marine Mammal Regulations including hooking live pups with hakipiks, and leaving the seals dying or dead, without turning them in., and without penalty.

...and why aren't they turning them in if Canada's government insists that this "industry" is essential for the economic well-being of the coastal regions of Canada?

As Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans is running what she thinks to be her re-election campaign, Mr.Spence, a seal murderer is complaining to the newspapers that he isn't making any money on the seal hunt.

With pelt prices almost worthless, and no market for other seal products, it's definitely an unprofitable venture.

Last year, another seal killer was quoted as saying, "You can make more money collecting pop bottles from the side of the road".

The EU ban of seal products is standing firm, though taxpayers are footing the $10million bill to fight it.

One would naturally think that without a market for a product, "production" should decrease, right?

If you're sane, you said, "right!"

Rather, the DFO raised the TAC (Total Allowable Catch) to appease the residence of the coastal communities, because they have the highest voter turnout!

For this, Canada's government is also risking current trade deals that could bring in more than the seal slaughter could when it was making money.

The seal slaughter in Canada is the largest marine mammal slaughter in the entire world.

Over-population of seals is not only a ridiculous argument. It's untrue.

The season for killing grey and harp seal is from Nov. 15-Jun 15 every year, yet seal killers wait until pups are born. If the slaughter were due, using their logic, to over-population, adult seals of breeding age (5 and up) would be killed.

Coast Guard assistance for seal hunt 2009/2010 alone was $4.3 million!

Canada taxpayer? How do you afford this?

It's election time. Please remember, Ignatieff and Layton love the seal slaughter, as well as every politician who is in the running only for the votes.

With an even smaller market than last year, Canada increased kill quota of seals by 20%, 468,200 total.

400,000 harp seals, 60,000 grey seals, 8,200 hooded seals, and possibly another 73,000 that are "experimental".

Though the official hunting season date begins November 15th, Cananda’s government, who periodically blame over-population as an excuse to kill seals, waits until pups are born in the spring. This clearly proves it was never for population control.

There was no formal announcement this year. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans simply updated their website. We believe this is to avoid the necessity of fielding questions about such an outrageous number, which is high, even when there used to be a demand for pelts. Canada will be electing new Members of Parliament in early May.

FriendsForSeals.Org urges citizens of Canada to contact their Members of Parliament now, and tell them they will not vote for any politician who is in support of the seal hunt.

The seal hunt is changing the eco-system of Canada’s Ocean life. It actually promotes more fishing. The outcome is the seals being tortured and killed for fur, leaving more available fish to be unnaturally killed and sold.

While we don't condone the consumption of seafood refusing to help end the seal hunt DOES NOT help promote veganism.
Closing the seal market DOES help.

The Canadian government has even gone so far as having the public fund the hunt, since the boycotts and EU ban are BEGINNING to take their toll. However, their stubbornness has caused them to INCREASE their kill quota. With the EU ban holding firm and the price of pelts being so low, the fisherman (who only make 5% of their annual income from killing seals) will find that eco-friendly endeavors which have been presented to them for off-season work, will prove more beneficial.

Closing the seal pelt market is the only way to stop the annual massacre forever.

A European Union judge has refused to suspend a ban on commercial seal products, delivering a blow to Canada's trade.

On Thursday, Judge Marc Jaeger rejected the argument the embargo of seal products would cause severe financial damage to Inuit communities.

The decision can be appealed. But a total ban will now be in effect until the European Court of Justice decides on the import ban's legality.

The EU's ban originally took effect in August, but a temporary exemption was granted to Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), which represents Canada's 53,000 Inuit people, and 15 other groups from Canada, Greenland and Norway, who argued in court the ban is unfair and discriminatory.

The European ban is aimed at the commercial seal hunt, which animal rights groups have denounced as cruel and inhumane.

The EU ban does exempt seal products harvested by Inuit, non-profit population management culls and products for travellers' personal use.

About $2.5 million worth of Canadian seal products are shipped to Europe annually.

Canadian officials have called the EU import ban "flagrant discrimination" and "illegal and immoral."

Canada has requested additional World Trade Organization consultations with the EU about the ban.
